How to Drape Sarees for Women
Saree draping is an art, and after draping a saree and wearing it completely it will change your look completely. A saree is just a single piece of fabric, but in reality, it is really hard to drape a saree especially if you are from a young generation. There are many styles for draping the saree. It depends on region, occasion, and personal preference.
Read this step-by-step guide to learn how to drape a saree. You will see the most common and widely worn style of draping a saree across India. It is known as the Nivi style. It is simple, elegant, and suitable for both formal and casual occasions.
- Step 1: You should begin by wearing a blouse that fits you well and a matching petticoat tied securely at the waist. The petticoat and blouse should match the color of the saree for women. They hold the weight of the saree.
- Step 2: Then start from the plain end of the saree and tuck it into the petticoat at the right side of your waist. Make sure the saree’s lower edge just slightly touches the floor. Then continue tucking the saree into the petticoat and wrap it once around your waist from right to left.
- Step 3: Once the saree is wrapped around your waist, take about 5-7 inches of fabric and try making pleats. Create around 5-8 pleats, ensuring each pleat is of equal width. Remember one thing the longer the saree and the slimmer you are the more the pleats. Then hold all the pleats together and tuck them neatly into the front of your petticoat to the left of your navel. Secure the pleats with a pin to keep them in place.
- Step 4: After putting the pleats into place, take the remaining length of the saree and drape it across your torso from left to right. The end of the saree, known as the pallu, is now to be pleated or left open depending on your style preference. Pin the pallu on your left shoulder, ensuring that it falls behind you, or you can pleat it and pin it for a neat look.
- Step 5: Make sure that the saree drapes well around your waist and the pallu falls correctly over your shoulder. You can make minor adjustments to the pleats and the drape to ensure comfort and style. The front pleats should be straight and the pallu should cover the shoulder comfortably.
Different Types of Saree Draping Styles
Sarees are worn and draped differently across various regions in India. Every draping style has its own value and wearing style. Here are some common ways to drape a saree:
Nivi Style (Traditional)
The Nivi style is the most common and traditional saree draping style. It is from the state of Andhra Pradesh but is now worn by many women all over India. In this style, the saree is tucked in at the waist, and pleated in the front, and the pallu is draped over the left shoulder. This style is worn by many women in India and is also suitable for everyday wear, office, or formal events.
Bengali Style
The Bengali drape is simple and known for its unique pallu style. This is also worn by a lot of women around India. The saree is draped with no pleats in the front, and the pallu is taken from the back and wrapped around both shoulders. Women always wear key wiring or brooch with this saree to hold the pallu in place. It is mostly worn during the festival Durga Puja and also in other festivals.
Gujarati Style
The Gujarati style is also known as the seedha pallu style. It also falls in the category of mostly worn saree draping. In this type, the pallu is draped differently from the Nivi style. In Gujarati style, the pallu is draped over the shoulder from back to front. Then it is brought forward from the back over the right shoulder, with the pleated end covering the torso. This style is often worn during traditional Gujarati events and weddings.
Maharashtrian Style (Nauvari)
The Maharashtrian style is known as the nauvari saree. It is a unique saree that is draped in 9 pleats instead of the usual 6 pleats. The saree is draped like a dhoti. In this style, the pleats are tucked at the back, and the pallu is draped over the shoulder. It is worn by every Maharashtrian woman at weddings, their festival Ganesh Chaturthi, and when they are performing their traditional dances.
Kerala Style (Mundum Neriyathum)
The Mundum Neriyathum or Kerala style is a traditional two-piece saree from Kerala. In this saree, the lower part is worn like a skirt and the upper part called neriyathu is draped over the shoulder. It is usually of white or cream color with golden borders. It is worn by women during festivals like Onam.
Coorgi Style
The Coorgi is also known as a Kodagu-style saree. It is a unique style because the pleats are created at the back, and the pallu is wrapped around the front and pinned over the right shoulder. This style is worn at weddings and festivals by women in the Coorg region of Karnataka.
Mumtaz Style
Mumtaz style is encouraged by the Bollywood actress Mumtaz from the 1960s. This is a famous style in Bollywood and around India too. This draping style is a close-fitting and neatly wrapped saree with fewer pleats and the pallu wrapped around the torso in a tight, layered fashion. This style gives a retro, glamorous look and it is perfect for parties or retro-themed events.
Lehenga Style
The lehenga saree draping style is a modern fusion made by today’s women. It combines the look of a lehenga with a saree. In this style, the lehenga is already draped with a skirt, and the pallu is also already styled over the shoulder. You just have to wear it correctly. This style is more popular nowadays at weddings and festivals.
Belted Saree
The belted saree style has also become a modern trend among women in india. It is a contemporary twist on traditional saree draping. After draping the saree in the Nivi or any other style, a belt is put around the waist over the pleats to secure them and provide a modern touch. This style is mostly worn by fashion-forward women. It is also often worn by women at fashion shows during runways and at modern weddings.
Pant Style Saree
The pant-style saree is also a modern trend in saree. It is a combination of traditional and contemporary fashion. Instead of using a petticoat, the saree is draped over pants or leggings and it gives it a modern look. The pallu is styled loosely or pleated and it is a trendy alternative to traditional saree with classy draping. This style is more popular for casual parties or office wear for modern women.

Storing
Storing a saree is also a factor in keeping its beauty. Avoid keeping them in wet or humid places because the fabric can decay or shrink and damage the fabric. Store the sarees in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. UV rays of the sun can cause the colors to fade over time. You can also wrap sarees in cotton or muslin cloth. This prevents dust and sarees also won't get smelly. You can also add naphthalene balls or neem leaves to prevent insects from entering inside the saree and cloth. You can also use plastic saree bags to store them.
- Silk and Zari Sarees: You should store silk sarees in a dry and cool place. You should also fold them carefully and avoid hanging them. To prevent the zari from tarnishing, you should wrap the saree in a muslin cloth.
- Cotton Sarees: Fold cotton sarees neatly and store them in a cool and fanned area. You should also hang sarees to avoid creasing.
Ironing

You can put them on sarees and iron sarees with ease without damaging the design. You should use a low to medium heat setting for cotton and silk sarees. If you are not able to iron you should give it to a professional to iron it for you.
Handling Stains
It is hard to remove stains from sarees because their color may fade or the fabric may be damaged. You should not use water to treat stains in silk sarees. You can use a dry cleaning solution or better tell a professional cleaner to help you with it. For other fabrics, you can gently dab the stain with a wet cloth and mild soap. Don't scrub it, it will damage the fibers.
Avoid Hanging Heavy Sarees
Don't hang heavy sarees made of heavy silk or embroidered ones, for a long time. Ti may be stretched or distort the fabric’s shape. You can fold those sarees in 2 or 3 and hand them till they dry out and then open them again and hang them for some time to remove moisture from them.
Air Sarees Regularly
If you rarely wear sarees and take them out after some time to wear at some function, you should air them before wearing them. It's important to air them out after some time.
